It's a delicate process and a delight to be doing. This is an editing nuance that I learned over time and that I put into practice daily.
Words are important but sounds and silences are a part of how we communicate in person and should also exist in podcast recordings. Over editing can make you and your guests/co-hosts sound robotic and should be avoided. I'm a careful, conscious and story driven podcast editor that believes that the technical side of editing is there to help highlight the speakers voices, not hide them.
